Beatmania fans beware; this is a shot of blasphemy that you might like to avoid. Developers 7 Studios, makers of wonderful titles such as Napoleon Dynamite for PSP and various other bad movie tie-ins, are planning on bringing DJ play to a mainstream audience through their new console game, Scratch: The Ultimate DJ. IGN brings further news on development after its announcement back in October.
Described by Dan Lehrich, ‘creator’ of the game, as being ‘a fine line between “game” and “instrument”’, Scratch is going to play remarkably similarly to games that a lot of Bemani players will be familiar with. Five buttons, one turntable and descending note charts - you can’t help but feel that maybe, just maybe, people were making this back on the other side of the millennium.
Regardless of glaringly obvious similarities to previous titles by Konami, Scratch allows the player to manipulate the music using the turntable, rather than it just acting as another trigger.
